Record breaking mums tell tales of rowing the Atlantic at BAF
13th Sep 2018
FOUR formidable mums who became the first women to row across the North Sea will headline the Exodus Travels Buxton Adventure Festival on Tuesday, 9th October 2018.
The daring team also hold the Guinness World Record for rowing 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean during the world’s toughest rowing race – the Atlantic Challenge.
They received the accolade after becoming the oldest all-female crew to complete the challenge, taking 67 days, five hours and two minutes to reach Antigua after setting off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands.
Francis Davies, Helen Butters, Janette Benaddi and Niki Doeg, known as the Yorkshire Rows, hit international headlines after the feat of endurance. They have since written a book about their life-changing adventure, as well as become successful motivational speakers.
At the Buxton Adventure Festival, they will talk about their motivations, the challenges overcome, and lessons learned from almost 10 weeks at sea in a rowing boat.
Matt Heason, Buxton Adventure Festival Director, said: “We have had a lot of amazing adventurers at the Buxton Adventure Festival who have completed some incredible challenges and the Yorkshire Rows are right up there with the best.
“The four mums, who have eight children between them, became friends after taking up rowing at a club in York. To then complete the world’s toughest rowing race is an incredible accomplishment but to set a new world record while doing so really sets the Yorkshire Rows apart.
“I’m delighted they will be speaking at the Buxton Adventure Festival and can’t wait to hear their personal stories, their motivations for taking on the challenge, the difficulties faced and how the lessons they learned can inspire us all to take on our own adventures.”
The event takes place at 7:30pm on Tuesday, 9th October 2018, at the Buxton Opera House, Water Street, Buxton. Book your tickets online or call the Box Office on 01298 72190.
The Buxton Adventure Festival in association with Exodus Travels is also supported by Buxton Opera House, Buxton Advertiser, The Old Hall Hotel and Heason Events.
